Laboratory Soil Testing

Soil Testing Service

A soil test will let you know exactly what your yard, garden or field crops need. You can treat your plants with the correct amount of lime and of fertilizer, ultimately saving you time and money, all while your lawn or garden will look and perform its best. A soil test analysis will provide important chemistry levels like pH and nutrients, as well as physical soil attributes like organic matter, soil type, and cationic exchange capacity - an indication of the ability of the plant to absorb the nutrients in soils.

Test your soil to:

  • Maximize your lawn or garden's potential by sampling the soil
  • Know pH and nutrient content
  • Apply the right amount of lime and fertilizer for what you need
  • Save $$ by not guessing and overapplying fertilizer or underapplying lime and wasting fertilizer applied
  • Support the environment - healthy soils support plants without needing to rely on heavy applications of chemicals and fertilizers which can end up escaping to sensitive waterways

Instructions for taking a soil sample:

  • Gather 10-12 samples of soil throughout your entire area.
  • The samples should be about 4”-6" deep for lawns and 6”-8" for gardens.
  • Remove the thatch on the top 1/2 to 1" of each sample.
  • No rocks, sticks, grass or leaves just soil.
  • Mix all your samples together in a clean bucket and bring a quart ziplock bag full of your soil to The Mill.
  • We will send the sample to the lab and contact you with the results and recommendations usually within 2 weeks.
